County of San Diego, CA - Regular - Full time - $58,136 - $71,489 Annually

The Medical Examiner's Office has an immediate opening for a Forensic Autopsy Specialist. As a Forensic Autopsy Specialist, you will assist Deputy Medical Examiners with autopsies and accept, process, and release deceased persons.


Required Licenses and Experience

1) Successful completion of an accredited Pathologists Assistant Training Program, OR,
2) An associate's of science degree or higher in Mortuary Science or Human Science (e.g. biology, nursing, medical/surgical assisting, emergency medicine, anatomy, physiology), or related field, AND one of the following:  

  1. A current, valid California Embalmer's License; OR,

  2. One (1) year full-time work experience working with a medical examiner/coroner’s office, assisting with autopsies, which involved frequent direct contact with deceased persons, OR,

  3. One (1) year full-time specialized applicable experience which demonstrates possession of the required knowledge, skills, and abilities above (e.g., occupations such as medical technicians, medical laboratory technicians, hospital technicians or mortuary technicians that include the handling of human remains).

HIRING PROCESS AND TIMELINE:

  • Job Offer and Background Process begins: Shortly after the interviews. Note: Current County employees may be excluded from additional background screening. 

  • Pre-employment Medical Screening: Approximately 3 days following successful background investigation results.

  • Anticipated Start Date: Start date will be based upon successful completion of medical screening or other mutually agreed upon date.

County of Kern, CA - Regular - Full time - $9,593 - $11,465 Monthly

This is a continuous recruitment and may close at any time without notice.   

Examination Schedule: 
Appraisal (100%):  Will be conducted for the purpose of evaluating the applicant's training, education, experience, interest and personal fitness for the position. Appraisal can be based on any of the following: investigation, oral examination and/or review of application. 

Applicants must attain at least a 70% score on each phase of the examination process. 
 

A Bachelor's Degree in administration of justice, public administration, criminalistics, forensic science, biological or physical science, chemistry or in a related field and two (2) years supervisory experience in a coroner/public administrator environment or a public agency working with death investigations.

OR 

Any combination of education from an accredited college or university with course work in public administration, administration of justice or related field and experience in a coroner/public administrator environment or a public agency working with death investigations equivalent to six (6) years which must include (2) years supervisory experience.

Completion of a certified Penal Code 832 course in arrest and firearms and a valid California Driver's License are required at the time of employment.

County of Kern, CA - Regular - Full time - $5,246 - $6,270 Monthly

Examinations:

Appraisal (Weight 100%): of training, education, experience, interest and personal fitness for the work based on any combination of the following: Investigation, oral exam and rating of application.

 

Should an oral exam be necessary, the oral exam will be weighted 100%.

 

Applicants must attain at least a 70% score on each phase of the examination process. 

 

Minimum Qualifications / Employment Standards: 

The equivalent of two (2) years of full time, paid investigative experience which provides knowledge of investigative principles and techniques.

 

Successful completion of Penal Code Section 832 course, prior to employment; or, successful completion no later than the first anniversary of employment as a Deputy Coroner. Employment beyond the one year probationary period is contingent upon completion of the Penal Code Section 832 course and satisfactory work performance.

 

Applicants must successfully complete a firearms course as prescribed by the Sheriff-Coroner within the one year probationary period. Applicants are required to qualify and carry a firearm.

 

Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License.
