Board of State and Community Corrections, Sacramento, CA - Regular - Full time - $167,052 - $184,632 Annually
The Board of State and Community Corrections has an immediate opening for a Director of In-Custody Death Review position who will serve as the Director of the In-Custody Death Review Division. This is a Governor-appointed position and subject to Senate confirmation. Under the administrative direction of the Executive Director, the Director of the In-Custody Death Review Division is responsible for developing and implementing a new state program to review and make recommendations related to death incidents occurring within a local detention facility. The Director plans, directs, and evaluates all program activities including reviewing investigations of in-custody deaths, conducting further reviews when necessary and appropriate, making recommendations, establishing and implementing health and behavioral health standards for local detention facilities, and reviewing the delivery of medical and behavioral health services within local detention facilities. This position provides high level expertise and serves as a member of the BSCC’s executive leadership team.
Senate Bill 519 (Chapter 306, Statutes of 2023) expanded the BSCC’s mission to include the promotion of legal and safe conditions for youth, inmates, and staff in local detention facilities and also created the position of BSCC Director of In-Custody Death Review (director) effective July 1, 2024.
The director will review investigations of any death incident occurring within a local detention facility, as specified. Upon that review, the director will make specific recommendations to the sheriff or administrator of the local detention facility who operates the local detention facility regarding those incidents, including, among other things, changes to policies, procedures, and practices, as specified.

The Director will work in an office building in Sacramento, California. Hybrid in-person work and in-state telework may be available. Incumbent must be able to travel as needed across California, and in occasional cases, outside of California to attend meetings and events. Travel may include air travel, driving and overnight stays.
County of Kern, CA - Regular - Full time - $9,593 - $11,465 Monthly

Examination Schedule:
Appraisal (100%): Will be conducted for the purpose of evaluating the applicant's training, education, experience, interest and personal fitness for the position. Appraisal can be based on any of the following: investigation, oral examination and/or review of application.
Applicants must attain at least a 70% score on each phase of the examination process.
A Bachelor's Degree in administration of justice, public administration, criminalistics, forensic science, biological or physical science, chemistry or in a related field and two (2) years supervisory experience in a coroner/public administrator environment or a public agency working with death investigations.
OR
Any combination of education from an accredited college or university with course work in public administration, administration of justice or related field and experience in a coroner/public administrator environment or a public agency working with death investigations equivalent to six (6) years which must include (2) years supervisory experience.
Completion of a certified Penal Code 832 course in arrest and firearms and a valid California Driver's License are required at the time of employment.
County of Kern, CA - Regular - Full time - $5,246 - $6,270 Monthly

Examinations:
Appraisal (Weight 100%): of training, education, experience, interest and personal fitness for the work based on any combination of the following: Investigation, oral exam and rating of application.
Should an oral exam be necessary, the oral exam will be weighted 100%.
Applicants must attain at least a 70% score on each phase of the examination process.
Minimum Qualifications / Employment Standards:
The equivalent of two (2) years of full time, paid investigative experience which provides knowledge of investigative principles and techniques.
Successful completion of Penal Code Section 832 course, prior to employment; or, successful completion no later than the first anniversary of employment as a Deputy Coroner. Employment beyond the one year probationary period is contingent upon completion of the Penal Code Section 832 course and satisfactory work performance.
Applicants must successfully complete a firearms course as prescribed by the Sheriff-Coroner within the one year probationary period. Applicants are required to qualify and carry a firearm.
Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License.
