County of San Mateo, CA - Regular - Full time - $104,977 - $131,185 Annually

The County of San Mateo Coroner's Office is seeking a dedicated and compassionate candidate to fill the role of Deputy Coroner. With respect to the sensitive needs of the families involved, the Coroner's Office promptly investigates and determines the cause, manner, and mode of death of decedents under the Coroner's jurisdiction.  
 
Deputy Coroners are expected to provide the highest level of professional services in determining the identification of the deceased, collecting and preserving evidence, collecting records, notifying the next of kin, safeguarding personal effects of decedents, and working closely with all agencies concerned with the decedent's death. The ideal candidate for this position will have:

  • One year of coursework in Criminal Justice, Forensic Science or a related biological science.

  • At least one year of experience working in a Coroner's Office either as a Deputy Coroner or a Medical Examiner Investigator or as a Deputy Sheriff with Deputy Coroner experience.

  • Strong interpersonal skills.

  • Experience dealing with people under severe emotional stress.

  • Working knowledge of medical terminology, basic anatomy and physiology, medications, medical treatments and pathophysiology of disease.

  • Effective oral and written communication skills with the demonstrated ability to prepare comprehensive reports.


Career Incentive: Employees holding permanent status may be eligible to receive an incentive equating to 2.5% of base pay in addition to all other compensation for possession of the Intermediate Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) Certificate, or an incentive equating up to 7.5% of base pay for the Advanced POST Certificate. The maximum allowable certification differential is 7.5%.

County of Kern, CA - Regular - Full time - $6,154 - $7,355 Monthly

Examinations:


Appraisal (Weight 100%): Will be conducted for the purpose of evaluating the applicant's training, education, experience, interest and personal fitness for the position. Appraisal can be based on any combination of the following: Investigation, oral exam and rating of the application.

 

Should an oral exam be necessary, the oral exam will be weighted 100%. 


Applicants must attain at least a 70% score on each phase of the examination process.

Minimum Qualifications/ Employment Standards: 

The equivalent of four (4) years full time experience comparable to the Kern County classification of Deputy Coroner.

 

Successful completion of a Penal Code 832 course and possession of a valid California Class C Drivers License.

County of Kern, CA - Regular - Full time - $5,246 - $6,270 Monthly

Examinations:

Appraisal (Weight 100%): of training, education, experience, interest and personal fitness for the work based on any combination of the following: Investigation, oral exam and rating of application.

 

Should an oral exam be necessary, the oral exam will be weighted 100%.

 

Applicants must attain at least a 70% score on each phase of the examination process. 

 

Minimum Qualifications / Employment Standards: 

The equivalent of two (2) years of full time, paid investigative experience which provides knowledge of investigative principles and techniques.

 

Successful completion of Penal Code Section 832 course, prior to employment; or, successful completion no later than the first anniversary of employment as a Deputy Coroner. Employment beyond the one year probationary period is contingent upon completion of the Penal Code Section 832 course and satisfactory work performance.

 

Applicants must successfully complete a firearms course as prescribed by the Sheriff-Coroner within the one year probationary period. Applicants are required to qualify and carry a firearm.

 

Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License.
